I have always loved Alan Rickman and in this film his acting is so nuanced and sensitive it makes me miss him even more, now that he's gone from us.

The scene near the end when Marianne is ill and he goes to get her motherI defy you to find a more perfectly romantic moment.

Upon returning with Mrs. Dashwood, he begins to leave the sick room and finally, the little nit Marianne looks up and thanks him.

The transformation of his face, fleeting and so real, makes my heart ache. The very end, the wedding scene, without a word spoken is so beautiful.

Again, Alan Rickman's expression of joy is If you like period films you will love this. I've seen several Jane Austen adaptions throughout the years, and this is by far one of my favorite!

I re-watched it recently, and I must say, I appreciate all the extra trivia about this film that Amazon provides. Learning that Emma Thompson the one and only!

The costumes and settings were beautiful, but the real treat was the musical score. The music danced around the characters, through the trees, and swallowed me in.

While I watched and rewatched this when I was younger, it has still been several years since I watched it the last time.

I suppose less camera angles was a budget issue, but even with that, this movie is a timeless classic and well worth anyone who loves a well-told Jane Austen story.

Every character was acted wellfull three dimensional players. One has 24 hrs to view the video once you start playing it..

Just fun to watch Rickman! Beautifully acted, gorgeous scenery, production throughout. Absolutely enchanting! Kate Winslet.. Emma was superb and Alan Rickman, dear Alan And Hugh Grant!

Quite brilliant too. I love Austen and this production just revels in the glorious age when respect and consideration were the order of the day in communication between men and women.

When sexuality and passion could be portrayed by a mere touch and is, in my opinion far more thrilling or a gaze held at length.

The scenery in the English countryside is gorgeous, the gowns and clothing spot on. First class throughout, well done.

Highly recommended. Perfectly cast, perfectly acted, perfectly directed. You cannot go wrong with this film. It is a place where ladies were still ladies and gentlemen were still gentlemen.

It is a place to observe hope, joy, and beauty, even if it is simply fiction. This movie is a permanent addition to my film collection, as well as my bookshelf.

This story is a reset button, when life appears dark and hopeless. I can pick up the book or movie depending on how much time I have , and feel better.

I'm very pleased with the Blu-ray transfer and the audio on this disk. With visually stunning scenes and a beautiful story line the screen play written by Emma Thompson was adapted from the novel with the same name by Jane Austen.

Filmed mostly in England there are beautiful scenes with wonderful estates and cottages and rolling English green hillsides. The story is a drama romance based in the early s and I highly recommend this movie.

Ang Lee outdid himself with this film. Other than Emma Thompson being perhaps a little bid too old to truly play Elinor Dashwood although she was excellent in the role, her acting skills cannot be denied , the film was beautifully done, the acting skillful, the story told with heart and finesse.

This novel by Jane Austen has often been slighted in favor of her better known "Pride and Prejudice," but it is just a fine a story and actually, more heart-wrenching, because it explores what happens to a family of women who are cast from a life of luxury into a life of "gentile poverty" and only have a roof over their heads a rather shoddy roof at that thanks to the beneficence of one of Mrs.

Dashwood's cousins. It is a true revelation of how cruel was society and the culture of early 19th century England. The scene that got me when I initially saw this movie in a theatre, and it still does no matter how many times I've watched this film since then, is the scene where that takes place in the bedroom where Marianne lies deathly ill and Elinor is tending to her and begs the unconscious Marianne not to leave her alone.

See all reviews from the United States. Top international reviews. I remember this film when it was originally released, because I went to see it with my family.

Something of a rare experience considering the advances in technology, what with streaming and all. It follows the fortunes of the Dashwood family, three daughters and their mother , who find their lives turned upside down when their father passes away, and their home is inherited by his son from a previous marriage, by law.

Before they move to a cottage in Devonshire, owned by a relative, Eleanor Dashwood Emma Thompson meets Edward, and it is clear that they are getting along like a house on fire, but Fanny Edward's sister disapproves of the match.

The younger Dashwood sister, Marianne Kate Winslet meets the dashing Willoughby Greg Wise , and immediately falls head over heels in love with him, but she also catches the eye of Colonel Brandon Alan Rickman.

Through a series of trials, tribulations, and crossed wires, in the old Jane Austen tradition, the two sisters eventually find their happy ever after.

I agree with another reviewer that I think some of the cast were indeed too old for the parts they were playing, but it's a very good film in spite of that.

At the end of the film, when we were in the cinema, the audience booed the 'bad guy. I won't say who! But it's definitely worth a look!

Thank you for your feedback. Sorry, we failed to record your vote. Please try again. Charm, sensibility, peppered with sense and marvellous acting, a starry cast topped by Emma Thompson simply wonderful as Eleanor, so well supported by a pretty, light-hearted Kate Winslet as Marianne and a lovely turn as their mother from Gemma Jones.

Hugh Grant is suitably clever and witty beneath a shy demeanour - a turn out of his usual romantic style! This is the best version of Austen's novel and a simply super film.

Every scene captivates whether it is waspish Harriet Walter, married to the girls' stepbrother James Fleet pontificating, or Robert Hardy and Elizabeth Spriggs as the jovial cousin and his stepmother, who offer the almost destitute Dashwoods a home in Devon, who bring fun and games and humour to the playing out of the story.

I love this film and Emma Thompson's witty, lively script well won its Oscar. Recommended highly. Had this film in video form from years ago so had to update to a dvd as I watch it as often as I can.

It's one of the most well directed and well produced films of a Jane Austen book. Hugely enjoyable with a stellar cast so well suited to the dialogue and social intercourse of the time.

A must for any dvd library. One person found this helpful. I won't review the content, but I'll just confirm that the BD is a decent transfer and a much-needed image upgrade from the DVD.

Contrast and detail are retained without any obvious smearing due to digital noise reduction. Audio is decent too.

Not stunningly stellar but a worthwhile investment for those lovers of this film. A welcome addition are Extras absent on the DVD release : interviews, background documentary and some deleted scenes shame that they were!

Still an excellent production of this Jane Austen novel. Wonderful screenplay by Emma Thompson, for which it got an Academy Award.

A star studded cast too. Load more international reviews.
